Carlos Aleman Brings Dark Chocolate to Delray’s Arts Garage!

I had the privilege of visiting with local artist and writer, Carlos Aleman, just before the debut of his latest Dark Chocolate exhibit (called “Samurai”) and was happily introduced to his wife, Jean, and surrounded by his wonderful works.

Carlos and I sat down last August, and I was very impressed with not only his talent, but also his kindness. He is worldly, imaginitive, and prolific in his expression of his creative genius. Be sure to catch this local treasure’s latest exhibit–Samurai Dark Chocolate at Delray’s Arts Garage! Why asked for the play-on-words reason behind the name of the exhibit, Carlos explained:

“Dark Chocolate is the nutritious, antioxidant-rich form of the deliciousness derived from the cocoa seed. So, a “Dark Chocolate” Japan, for instance, would be the best version of Japan–or, at least what I like best about it. And, this Samurai Dark Chocolate is an extension of what I did last year. […] This is my geek, pop culture thing. It’s about not being too serious. I believe in sincerity, not seriousness. There’s so much seriousness in this world, I want to tone it back a little.”

Upon your visit, you will be treated to a bevy of Japanese-inspired paintings and sculptures from this incredible artist, including many that were not featured in his previous big Dark Chocolate showing:

The Arts Garage has established itself as a mecca of local talent–from artists to musicians and more–and, having Carlos’ exhibit there is a real special treat.

Don’t miss Carlos Aleman‘s Samurai Dark Chocolate at the nine four Gallery at Delray’s Arts Garage, showing now through August 11th, and be immersed in his vision! The showing is full of vivid colors and imagery that express his passion and love for Japan and it’s culture with a pop/animation flavor to his presentation. Your senses will be absolutely delighted! While you’re there, be sure to also pick up his latest art books.

PokemonGo at the Palm Beach Zoo!

Catching Poliwags and Spazzing over Capybara!!!

Pokemon Go at the Palm Beach Zoo Block

Welcome to a BONUS episode of the Curve the Cube Podcast. It is just a bonus, but still very worthy of a number. So, it’s #84! It’s been a while since I’ve covered an event, and this was very impromptu, but still very fun.

(To hear the last event I covered, you will have to rewind to episode #60 where I covered an art gallery opening and then pretty far back to episode #16 with the Shock Pop Comic Con.)

In THIS episode, I get to geek out about the phenomenon of Pokémon Go! There is one local spot that is taking FULL advantage: The Palm Beach Zoo! They laid down some lures and transformed their park full of Pokéstops into a Pokémon trainer’s dream. Sending out a map ahead of time, the zoo primed the local masses to get their teams together and have a #PokemonGo invasion… and it worked!!

A newbie trainer myself, I was SO JAZZED to get out there and go hunting for Pokémon. So, I had my map ready and spent a fun evening capturing Exeggcutes, Pinsirs, Poliwags, and TONS more. The fountain area was particularly littered. It was awesome!!

I stopped along the way and talked to a couple of groups of fellow trainers who were kind enough to spare a few minutes for my questions. (Thanks, guys!) We talked about the sudden craze that is Pokémon Go, getting into teams, strategy, and how much the special event drew them to be at the zoo that night. It was awesome!

There was live music, a Food Truck Invasion (shout out to Hoffman’s Chocolates!), and of course the wonderful and real-life Pokémon—the animals themselves! They absolutely remained the stars of the show!! (Scroll down for the bonus podcast episode covering Pokémon at the Palm Beach Zoo!)

I’m having a full podcast with some peeps from the Zoo in a couple of weeks. It’s slated to be episode #88 and released on August 8th; but, keep in touch over social media for updates—mostly on Twitter.

But, aslo keep an eye out while playing the game yourselves! Remember to keep looking up and watching out for “No Trespassing” signs, sketchy folk, cliffs, and mall fountains. It’s just a game, people!!

This is Pokémon Go at the Palm Beach Zoo!

Enjoy!!

#84 – EVENT – Pokemon Go at the Palm Beach Zoo – 2016-07-16:

Since this quick, impromptu episode has no sponsor, I’ll ask you to please consider supporting the show yourself. It’s my complete pleasure to continue to bring you a show for free, and I thank my sponsors for covering most of my costs. But, there is still room for more help—and, that is where you can come in. Help me continue to keep bringing you conversations with south Florida’s most inspiring, passionate, and talented people. Any amount helps. Visit https://www.patreon.com/CurveTheCube.

It’s a Chemradery Kind of Summer in South Florida

Chemradery Block - 1400x1400There is a certain feeling in the air that drifts around us during the summer. There is an extra element of fun, excitement, and freedom felt during these summer months that cannot be matched any other time of year. We are reminded of how our hard work pays off with a little extra time for time to take off with friends family… vacations, relaxation, and anticipation of what our future holds.

As we celebrate our freedoms today–those freedoms that make America the Land of opportunity that She is–I’m thinking of some those who have made the most of theirs–my curvist guests. In particular, I’m filled with pride for my 41st guests, Chemradery! Armed with strong musical training, elevated dreams, and a blood-sweat-tears kind of determination, the guys of Chemradery have made their meteoric rise onto the south Florida music scene the stuff of legend. They dominate contests, have opened for other top talents, and (best of all) remain incredibly humble and sweet guys.

You may have been fortunate to catch them at this last Thursday’s Clematis by Night:

CTC's Jaime with Chemradery's Greg backstage at WRMF's No Snow Ball 2015.

If not, don’t fret: the Chemradery guys are never ones to keep fans waiting too long. Catch front man and lead singer, Greg, lend his vocal talents to tonight’s Fourth of July celebration in downtown West Palm Beach–Fourth on Flagler! With a background in opera, his voice is one of those rare gifts that can really do the song justice, and you will NOT be disappointed!! Be sure to also follow their social media and check into their website regularly for show updates.

Palm Beach Turns out for Vanilla Ice and TMNT Turtle Power

Photo Jun 03, 6 54 22 AM

As soon as I heard that my wish-list future guest, Rob “Vanilla Ice” Van Winkle, was making the rounds on Tuesday to announce he was premiering Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows the following night, I knew I HAD to bring my son, Jordon. We are HUGE TMNT fans, and passing on certain pop culture loyalties to future generations is an American tradition. Rob made stops at both the KVJ Show & WPBF to make his announcement:

Paramount Pictures gave Rob (a longtime honorary Turtle) the opportunity to host his own premier of TMNT2 anywhere he wanted to. So, a true man of our town, Rob took the time out of his busy I Love the 90s tour schedule to hold his premier right in downtown West Palm Beach! I’ve seen him perform several times before, and Rob always gives 100%. So, he takes his tours very seriously. Even with a show scheduled the next day in Alabama, he still prioritized his hometown, inviting not only friends and family, but also bringing a bunch of kids through our sponsor, Little Smiles! And, to top it all off, he made it a free event for everyone who showed up–as many as 400 people!

He entered the theater with Wes Kain and all the Little Smiles kids and pumped up the crowd before the show:

Then, in true Vanilla Ice fashion, he took a selfie with the audience. Try to spot KVJ’s Kevin Rolston and ESPN’s Josh Cohen. (Jordon and I are just out-of-shot to the left.)

As the lights went down, Rob encouraged full attention to the movie screen, and the crowd was NOT disappointed! The action sequences are phenomenal, the graphics dazzled, the storyline was well-crafted, and notable actors such as Tyler Perry, Megan Fox, Laura Linney, and Will Arnett gave stellar performances. I was both wowed and laughing the whole time! There’s a surprise moment in the movie where Rob’s “Ice Ice Baby” plays, and the whole crowed cheered. What a fun showing!! Everyone–adults, kids, seniors, pets–should go see this movie, which premiers today. Particularly, if you were a fan of the first Transformers moving, you will LOVE TMNT2! (There is even a cameo by Bumblebee!!)

Afterwards, in the hallways of the City Place Muvico Theater, the fans gathered around for pics with the man of the hour. Of course, I had to carry the selfie tradition by utilizing Rob’s built-in selfie stick. (He truly does take great selfies!)

Vanilla Ice Project Wrap Party

Be sure to also catch this season of the Vanilla Ice Project Saturdays at 10. This Saturday’s episode, episode 8, is Strike Zone.

I was fortunate to be invited by former CTCKids guest, Alex Ariete, to this season’s wrap party back on February 18th, and I can honestly tell you that the house is AMAZING!! Follow Rob (“Vanilla Ice”) on Twitter and look for his next Palm Beach event. Hopefully, he’ll land on this podcast pretty soon!!

Where does the Name “Curve the Cube” Come From?

Stuck in a Rut at Work

People ask me “What does ‘Curve the Cube’ mean?” or “How did you come up with ‘Curve the Cube’?” (or some similar variation) from time to time. Well, the inspiration comes from a lightbulb moment I had one day while at work. As I explain in more detail in my post about what a Curvist is, I’ve always wondered what other people did to create a life for themselves that was full of doing what they love. Growing up, I was preparing myself for something less risky, more of a “sure thing,” like being a doctor, lawyer, or businesswoman. But, as was evidenced by the economic free fall of the mid 2000s, nothing is guaranteed. Settled into what would have once been a secure corporate path, I had a firsthand seat the the fraying and eventual unraveling of more than one company. I personally saw DOZENS of people walked out of jobs–even a whole department in one fell sweep once. Though I had a Bachelor’s degree in business (with two majors) in my back pocket with over 10 years experience as an Analyst, I grew more and more nervous about the likelihood of keeping my paycheck coming from one place for too long.

So, there I was one day in my cubicle wondering why I was stuck in a job I was enjoying less and less everyday in exchange for its ever-dwindling sense of security. Why was I willing to grow more and more dissatisfied with what I was doing to make a living in exchange for less and less of a guaranteed payoff? Even those benefits that once seemed easy to take for granted (pension, health insurance, time off, etc…) were slipping away from the grasp of most people I knew. And, I couldn’t help thinking, “What’s the point of this commitment to a ‘sure thing’?” If life was becoming more risky anyway, how was I not at least leveraging that risk in doing SOMETHING that I really loved? As I’d often questioned before, someone has figured out how to get by doing x, y, or z; why not me?

As I was having these thoughts, I was listening to my favorite podcast (at the time, of course, lol) called Nerdist, hosted by Chris Hardwick. That’s when the idea hit me: just find these people living their passion and ask them. Have a conversation and record it for the world to hear. What was I going to learn? How would I be changed? And, who else would these conversations inspire? So, I investigated how to start a podcast (pretty easy, it turns out) and brainstormed an initial guest list. Lucky for me, my pilot episode was set to pack a punch–literally–when Kevin Rolston, host of The KVJ Show said yes!!

Starting this podcast was one of the favorite projects of my life. The conversations I have had thus far have encouraged both others and myself to live a life being more true to oneself, rediscover passions, and think “outside the box” on how to get them done. These revelations and switches in thought stoked the flame within myself to pursue a life in marketing and social media, rather than as an Analyst. In actually taking this lean, I knew I was set for a bumpy road. I was basically starting my career over! But, my guests have really given me the inspiration to be courageous and go for it. Now that I am not only full-speed ahead with this podcast, but also in a marketing position with a really solid firm, I’ve completed the arc and have curved my own cube! I have even had both the head of Nerdist, Adam Rymer, and the CEO of Juicy Results, Jeremy Pound, on my podcast to give me and anyone else out there wanting to start a new digital radio or marketing thing some great advice!

On a side note, I have had people mistakenly call this podcast “Curb the Cube.” While I own both URLs for easy of discovery, I definitely did not want to call it “Curb the Cube.” For me, to “curb” your current situation sounds like a much more definitive and drastic action to take than to “curve” it. So, I think it would be a very irresponsible message for me to put out there to completely throw caution to the wind, quit your job, and lead a nomadic life in pursuit of something while totally disregarding a need for bread and butter. In the end, you have to work REALLY hard to curve your cube–you have to be dedicated, make real sacrifices, and break through serious moments of doubt (both internal and external). There may be months at a time (or, even years) when you feel like you are working multiple jobs–and it should, if you are truly committed to both your craft and your end of the societal bargain. But, the bottom line is that you should find something you are passionate about and do that thing–whether full time, as a part time gig, or as a side hobby that costs you more than it earns you. If you love it, do it.

Find your passion. Do your thing!

Enjoy! ~ Jaime

Andrea D’Marco Moves from the Rink to the Ring!!

Andrea D'Marco Ocampo hosting WWE NXT

For the last several years, Andrea D’Marco (formerly, “Andrea Ocampo”) has been delighting Florida Panthers hockey fans with her hosting skills–providing rink-side interviews, commentary, insights, and an unstoppably fun energy. Her infectious smile and confidence have garnered Andrea her own fan base, with a league of followers cheering this career contessa at every turn of her journey. Andrea’s career turns have been crushing the world of sports speedway–from time early in her career as a cheerleader for the Miami Dolphins through her time as the arena host with the Panthers. Recently, however, Andrea has moved on from hosting at the hockey rink to ruling the wrestling ring by to becoming the new ring announcer for WWE’s NXT!!

D’Marco’s steady rise to entertainment domination is a testament to the power of positivity–even in an industry that can be quite cutthroat. She is quick with a kind message, piece of advice, or virtual hug; and, she is constantly providing her followers with a host (no pun intended) of positive affirmations and inspirational quotes, like this:

Moreover, she continues to be a strong role model and champion for other women. When I was starting this once-fledgling podcast a couple of years ago and reached out to her to be a guest, she enthusiastically agreed! She came over, we shared some wine and giggles, and she gave my listeners some great insights into the hard work, determination, and lessons that have taken her to and through every career milestone.  (And, you would not believe what she puts in her coffee or what her movie guilty pleasure is, by the way!)

So, her move to WWE is another milestone of well-deserved success!! At WWE, Andrea has been able to continue to show off her reporting skills by conducting backstage interviews with such stars as Alex Riley:

What a pro! Andrea’s move to WWE leaves a hard-to-fill role with the Florida Panthers, and her departure was clearly bittersweet for all involved, as is evidenced by how she announced it:

By all accounts, Andrea is an asset to south Florida entertainment, and she will add professionalism, sass, and a sharp presence to the world of WWE. So, please add your voice to the chime of congratulations on her Twitter feed. CONGRATULATIONS, ANDREA!!

Enjoy!!
